check your batteries

It's a lesson we always forget with the use of our complicated electronic contraptions we carry.

"Always check your batteries!"

And it almost caused me a photo opportunity in my shooting assignent last Thursday.

I left for the Senate early (8:00 am is too early for a guy like me) from Quezon City. I had brought my photo equipment especially my spare battery for my camera. It was a necessity for a digital camera to carry an extra battery since that is one's lifeblood in the field.

I did not dare check my batteries the previous night because I thought i had recharged that spare battery already.

I arrived at the Senate at around 10 am, the jueteng hearing not beginning yet.

By 11:45, with the hearing heating up, my battery decides to be empty.

Replaced it with my spare, only to find that it had no charge.

Knocked the previous battery on the wall hoping to have get any charge. (silly thing to do, if you ask me, but i was hoping kinetic energy might work)

No chance at all.

Boss texted a few minutes later that I need to run to another press conference in Makati in the afternoon to shoot uncle & nephew tandem Iggy & Mikey Arroyo.

I decide to go home. Walking out of the Senate at noon was a very bad idea.

1pm I'm home and I charge up one of the batteries for a 30 minutes and i'm off to Makati on the MRT by 1:45.

At 2:50, I'm at Perea St., with other media outfits still waiting for the press conference to start.

As I come out of the elevator, Iggy Arroyo walks past by with cameras set at him.

Whew! Made it just in time.
